Description:

A Framework for Ethical Decision Making: Janet May, Sound Employment Solutions

Recently there have been several examples, both on a national and local level, of public employees and employers acting in a manner that can best be described as "ethically challenged."  These examples cover a wide spectrum from instances of government officials shading the truth, to incidents of public employees misappropriating funds, to incidents of employees using government property and resources for personal gain.  In this scenario-based workshop, participants will approach ethical challenges using typical employer policies, procedures and regulations as a foundation for decision-making and making the ethical choice.  Topics include:

  • The history of ethics and the emergence of what academics view as an ethics crisis
  • Strategies for making ethical decisions
  • Common ethical issues in public workplaces
  • Key elements of an ethics policy and supporting policies/procedures
  • Strategies for ensuring organizational and individual accountability
  • Questions to ask when the "ethical" decision is not covered in policies/procedures
  • How to make effective decisions that support the organization's goals and an ethical culture
